Is this just SEO with a new label?

written July 4, 2026

No. Traditional SEO decides where your page ranks in Google’s list of links. AI-search visibility — GEO — decides whether ChatGPT, Google’s AI and Gemini name your product at all when a buyer asks for software in your category. They read different sources and answer in different ways, so you can rank on page one and still be named in zero AI answers.

It’s a fair question to ask, because every agency you’ve talked to lately is “AI-native” and half of it is SEO with the serial numbers filed off. Here’s the actual difference — where the two overlap, and where they don’t.

Where they overlap

Good fundamentals help both. A clear, fast, well-structured site with honest, plain-text information about what your product does, who it’s for, and how it compares — that’s good SEO hygiene, and it’s also exactly what an AI needs to quote you. Accurate third-party listings and genuine reviews help both, too. If someone tells you AI visibility and SEO are completely unrelated, they’re overselling.

Where they diverge

The engines read different things and hand back different results. SEO optimizes a page’s rank; GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — optimizes whether you’re cited in an answer.

Category Traditional SEO AI visibility (GEO)
What it optimizes A page’s rank in a list of links Whether you’re named in a generated answer
What the engine reads Backlinks, keywords, page signals Roundups, review sites, community, plain-text facts
What the buyer sees Ten blue links to evaluate A short list of products, already chosen
How you measure it Rank tracking for keywords Share of answer across engines and repeated runs
Can you be strong at one, absent in the other? Yes — routinely Yes — routinely

Why you can rank on Google yet be invisible in AI

AI answers get built from third-party roundups, review platforms, community threads, and the plain-text facts on your own site — not the backlink profile that wins a Google ranking. So a product that ranks page-one on Google can go completely unnamed when a buyer asks the AI directly, and a smaller competitor with strong category authority can take the recommendation. And the answer increasingly replaces the click: when Google shows an AI summary, people click a result just 8% of the time, versus 15% without one (Pew Research, 2025). Different game, different scoreboard.

Our actual difference: measurement first

The reason “AEO agency” makes marketers wary is that most of it is unmeasured. We start somewhere you can verify: your buyers’ real prompts, run across ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode several times each, reported as a distribution, with every raw answer archived and published. The work to move it follows the measurement, and every month you can check whether it moved. That’s the whole of what we do: what AI visibility is, and exactly how we measure it.

So do you drop SEO?

No. Keep whatever SEO is working. AI visibility is a separate, newer surface — and it’s where the shortlist increasingly gets made: 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier (G2, 2026). It needs its own measurement and its own work.
